Micro Makeovers: three easy paint projects

Revamp a favourite piece of furniture or create a bespoke shelving unit. You’ll be amazed at what you can achieve in a few hours

1. Revamp a retro chair

Want to give a classic wooden chair a simple, modern makeover? A few hours is all it takes to achieve this designer-look dipped chair leg effect.

Simply pop your chosen piece on a dust sheet and gently sand. Remove dust with a vacuum cleaner, then wipe with a damp cloth. Using a synthetic brush, apply your chosen water-based colour all over while the surface is still slightly damp, painting in the direction of the grain for best results. Although your chair will be touch-dry in just one hour, leave for six hours before applying the second coat.

When completely dry, measure where you want the colour to start on the lower legs. Mask off the area you don’t want to paint with tape to create a neat line, then apply the second shade. Once dry, remove the masking tape – then stand back and admire your handiwork.

2. Budget-friendly bathroom storage

Looking for a stylish and affordable place to put your towels, beauty products and plants? This bespoke shelving system, created from simple wooden boxes (available online or from larger DIY stores) is the ideal solution.

Decide how you’ll arrange the boxes on your wall, then paint them in varying shades that pick up accents in your room. Dulux Quick Dry water-based paint is hardwearing and washable, making it perfect for this job. Once painted, screw the boxes to the wall and wave goodbye to unnecessary bathroom clutter.

3. Table turnaround

Transform a tatty table with a bold lick of paint. For a fashionable finish, paint the top and legs in contrasting shades. (You can use the Dulux Visualiser to find tonal combinations, then have your chosen colours mixed in either a mid-sheen Satinwood or low-sheen Eggshell.) For ease, flip the table upside down and start with the legs, before turning it back over to paint the top.
