Changing Rooms: Episode 1

Transformation 1 – Living Room

Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen took on the challenge of brightening up Claire’s lifeless living room, with the approval of best friend Joe.

If you were a fan of the original series, you know Laurence doesn’t shy away from bright, bold designs. And the theme he gave this room revamp was ‘Forever Peacocky’, so you can already imagine the colours.

He used lots of teals and corals from the Dulux range:

Flamingo Pink
Mouldy Dream
Turquoise Jewel
Emerald Glade
Coral Flair

Transformation 2 – Bedroom

Jordan and Russell from 2LG helped mother-daughter duo Lisa and Kirstie, who wanted to give a tired, shabby chic bedroom a new lease of life.

2LG took inspiration from drag and called this makeover ‘Shantay Swansea’. They had a helping hand from Dulux Heritage, combing blues and pinks from the new collection. They used:

DH Oxford Blue
Potters Pink
DH Blossom

Special Guests: Show Producers, Katie and Mark

We had the pleasure of chatting to Executive Producer of Changing Rooms, Katie Brosnin, and Director of Entertainment at Shine TV, Mark Saman.

On the podcast, they shared how the new series came about and why it’s the right time for its return.

“After the year that we’ve all had, everyone is craving something that feels good and warm… and as much as anything, everyone has spent lots of time staring at their own four walls!”

They also tell us more about the casting process and the important roles they both play on the show.

Dr Dulux: Decorating techniques from the show

In this special series of our podcast, instead of answering your decorating dilemmas, Dr Dulux explains how you can recreate the painting techniques from the show in your own home.

Transformation 1: How do you create striking concentric coloured panelling?

According to Dr Dulux, the best strategy to take is to paint your walls first and then tackle the coloured boxes, starting with the outside box and working your way in.

Check out this video for an easy-to-follow demonstration and the tools you need for the project.

When it comes to picking the right colours for this design, Dr Dulux recommends choosing your main wall colour first. Then use the Dulux Visualiser App to help you find shades that complement and work with your new colour scheme.

Transformation 2: What are Dr Dulux’s top tips for painting a ceiling?

The most important thing when you’re painting a surface that’s in a tricky position is safety. Here are a few things to consider:

  • Make sure you use a sturdy ladder, perhaps one with a handle if it’s easier
  • Use an extended roller pole when applying the paint to the middle section
  • Use Dulux Simply Refresh paint – it can cover a surface in one coat, making light work of a fiddly job

When you’re painting the edges of a ceiling, use a synthetic angled brush for cutting in and try to do it in one smooth stroke. This will help you achieve a neat line.

And lastly, don’t be afraid to make bold colour choices for your ceiling instead of white paint.
